India's higher education system is the third largest in the world, after China and the United States. The system includes almost 350 universities and the Indian Institutes of Technology (IITs), which have been globally acclaimed for their standard of education.

In 1956, the German government offered technical assistance for establishing an institute of higher education in engineering in India. A formal agreement was signed in Bonn in 1959 for the establishment of the Indian Institute of Technology at Madras. Although official support from the German government has ended, several Indo-German collaborative research projects still exist. IITM is now regarded as one of the finest engineering institutions in India, with 11 engineering disciplines taught and ongoing research projects undertaken with universities worldwide. The institute has 16 faculties, which include physics, management studies, chemistry, and humanities and social science in addition to nine engineering faculties including ocean engineering.
The institute has a unique campus within a protected forest, carved out of the adjacent Guindy National Park.

Established in 1958 with assistance from UNESCO and with funds contributed by the former Soviet Union, IIT Bombay is the second-oldest campus of the Indian Institutes of Technology system. The chosen location for the campus was Powai, a suburb northeast of Mumbai. One of the main objectives of establishing the institute was to develop facilities for studies in a variety of specialized engineering and technological sciences. The institute offers undergraduate programs in chemical, civil, electrical, mechanical, and metallurgical engineering.

IITK is an Indian Institute of Technology, set up in Kanpur in 1959. It is primarily focused on research in engineering and science, also offering undergraduate programs in engineering disciplines. In 1963 IITK became the first institute in India to offer computer science education. It also offers specialized engineering courses in nuclear technology, aerospace engineering, and laser applications.

The University of Delhi has been India's top-ranked university over the past five years according to the various international ranking systems used worldwide. The University of Delhi offers a large array of traditional and specialist degree programs from its 16 faculties and 86 departments.
The university has grown from a series of three colleges that came together in 1922 to found the establishment. The University of Delhi now operates from two campuses in the city. The huge size of the university is reflected in the fact that it operates 34 libraries across the two campuses.

Anna University is located in the state of Tamil Nadu, where it has incorporated over 250 existing colleges and now offers higher education courses specializing in technology and applied sciences. The university has highly ranked programs of mechanical, aeronautical, and manufacturing engineering, and extensive offerings within various engineering fields. It has three regional campuses, at Tirunelveli, Madurai, and Coimbatore.

IITD is located in the south of Delhi on a purpose-built campus, which is almost a mini-city itself. The campus has its own water supply and backup electricity supply, along with shopping complexes to cater to the daily needs of its residents. As with all the Indian Institutes of Technology, IITD offers largely engineering degrees with other allied disciplines, such as physics and mathematics. The institute also operates a number of interdisciplinary research centers that combine the expertise of staff across the different departments to work on projects such as energy studies and the atmospheric sciences.

The Indian Institute of Science (IISc) is a research institute of higher learning located in Bangalore. It was established in 1909 and is considered to be the premier institute for scientific research and study in India. IISc was the first higher education establishment in the country to offer master's-level courses in scientific disciplines.
The Computer Centre, established in 1970 as a central computing facility, became the Supercomputer Education and Research Centre (SERC) in 1990. SERC, India's leading computing research center with state-of-the-art computing facilities, participates in sponsored research projects in collaboration with several high-profile government and private agencies.

IIT Kharagpur was the first of the original five IITs to be established to train scientists and engineers after India attained independence in 1947. It shares its organizational structure and undergraduate admission process with sister IITs. The students and alumni of IIT Kharagpur are informally referred to as KGPians. Among all IITs, IIT Kharagpur has the largest campus, the most departments, and the highest student enrollment. IIT Kharagpur is particularly famous for its festivals: Spring Festival (a social and cultural festival), Kshitij (techno-management festival), and Shaurya (a sports festival).
In addition to the main campus at Kharagpur, the institute has an extension center at Kolkata to provide venues for continuing education programs and distance learning courses. The institute has a commitment to providing continuing education for qualified engineers and scientists to learn new technologies and developments in their academic disciplines. In addition to conducting educational courses, the extension center develops model curricula for engineering education across the country.

One of the largest higher learning institutions in India is also the country's first modern university. Founded in 1857, the University of Calcutta is a public university located in the city of Kolkata (formerly Calcutta). The institution is regularly ranked in the top 100 schools in India by various world university ranking systems.
Well known for a history of excellence in subjects like economics, history, philosophy, social sciences, and languages, today science, business, and engineering are also popular majors at the University of Calcutta. Other programs include agriculture, arts, commerce, education, journalism and library science, fine arts, music, home science, and law.
