Basic Calling Information
Area Codes and Local Numbers
- Area codes in India contain between two and three digits.
- Local numbers in India contain up to eight digits.
- Area code + subscriber number total 10 to 11 digits.
- When calling between cities within India, dial the DAC ("0") before the area code. Do not dial this access code when calling from another country.
Mobile Phones
- Mobile phone numbers in India contain 10 digits and start with "7," "8," or "9."
- When calling a mobile phone from within India, always dial the DAC ("0") before the 10-digit number. Do not dial this access code when calling from another country.
Special Numbers and Services
- Toll-free numbers start with the prefix "1-600."
- Premium numbers start with the prefix "0-900."
- Dial "9" or "0" to access an outside line when calling from a business or other self-contained (PBX) telephone system.
- The Voice Mail Service access code is "170."

Tones
- Ring tone: Double ring, repeated regularly
- Busy tone: Equal length on and off tones
